Cultural appropriation has become a trending topic over the last few years. Girls at festivals wearing henna, bindis and feathered war bonnets were just some of the reasons to offend a lot of people. To be honest, I’m pretty neutral about it. I love the part where Asian culture is rapidly influencing a lot of fashion trends nowadays. Bangles, bindis, colorful bags, mirrored tops. I can’t complain. I’m loving it all. Then comes the downside. People were once bullied for wearing corn rows. And suddenly it’s totally hip and everyone’s wearing it (lil’ side note: went shopping yesterday and literally everyone was wearing corn rows). I remember one day in elementary school. My mom had drawn with henna on my hands. I felt so beautiful. So I went to school the next day and the teacher was totally grossed out about my hands. And suddenly it’s not gross anymore. It’s a thing. It’s a festival thing. It’s cool with me, but give credit where credit’s due. Do some cultural research before buying a bindi of applying henna. Know what culture you’re wearing, so you won’t dumb out when someone confronts you with it. And lastly, be proud of who you are and never apologize for it! ❤
